Spiral staircases are circular stairways which add a new and attractive look to the interior décor of the house. These spiral stairways are great in buildings and homes with limited space, the mostly used spiral staircases for outdoor uses are the metal ones which are made of either wrought iron or steel, for indoors- spiral staircases made of wood are generally used. However, to build a spiral staircase inside the house prior permission from the local authorities as well as proper documentation is required. Spiral staircases can be both elegant and sturdy at the same time, the main idea lies in selecting the right combination for the right available space. Moreover purchasing the right kind of materials from a reputed store for building a spiral staircase also needs the signature of a building inspector.

There are usually two ways in which spiral stairs can be constructed in any house or building, one can either purchase a do it yourself kit for installing a spiral staircase as per any design in the catalogues. A spiral staircase kit consists of a sturdy pole for the center of the staircase, steps and brackets that need to be attached to the pole, and a circular clamp for attaching the stairs to the center pole. The clamp consists of a brace to which the stairs are rested upon. The stair is further strengthened with the support of the wall. Another option is hiring a local artisan to design a spiral staircase as matched with the interior decors.

Metal Spiral Staircase

While planning to build a spiral staircase inside the house like in a hall, it should be ensured at the beginning that the ceiling is high enough or else the lack of headroom might lead to hurting the head while climbing the stairs. The process of building a spiral staircase starts with cutting the risers as per the patterns and the size required which ought to be of 4 inches in width. Multiple numbers of wood pieces are required for a single riser, the wood used is to be smoothed using a sand paper and then attached together with glue. The next step is installing the center pole into the floor, the length of this pole should be equivalent to the height of the upper level floor from the lower floor. The entire weight of the staircase comes on this pole, therefore it should also be capable of withstand that pressure. The initial step would be welding the steps at the top and the bottom of the pole to the pole itself, and then the remaining steps need to be installed and attached to the pole. The installing of handrails is the most tricky part and needs a bit of carpentry skills, however purchasing handrails which are meant only for the spiral staircases come with printed instructions which further help in installing them properly. Spiral Staircase kits are a great help in both building and installing spiral stairways in indoor halls as well as outdoor decks equally.
